Teacher Advisor uses IBM Watson™ technology, specially trained by K-8 math experts, to recommend the best available resources through search. We plan to further train Watson to make even more informed resource recommendations in the near future, based on teacher needs.

Q: Is Teacher Advisor a tool for teachers or students?

A: Teacher Advisor was built specifically for teachers to use for lesson planning and content/pedagogy knowledge enhancement. It is a dependable source for supplementary classroom materials, as well as information on teaching strategies and grade-specific math standards. Teacher Advisor is not in any way an evaluative tool, and it is also not intended to be used during class time as a student-facing tool.

Q: For which grades and content areas does Teacher Advisor offer resources?

A: Teacher Advisor supports Kindergarten thru 8th grade math.

Q: Which browsers can be used to access Teacher Advisor?

A: You can access the tool using Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

Q: Will Teacher Advisor help me differentiate for students who have different learning needs?

A: Yes. Teacher Advisor provides you with the ability to quickly find high-quality, aligned, grade-level resources by concept. Simply type in the concept you're interested in and filter by grade-level to find content aligned to that particular concept for the chosen grade/student level.

Q: Will I be able to find assessments through Teacher Advisor?

A: The vast majority of lessons available in Teacher Advisor have exit tickets that allow teachers to quickly assess student understanding. Many content providers also include formative and pre-assessments as part of their unit overviews, which can be found in the "Strategies" section. However, there are no summative assessments currently available in Teacher Advisor, due to advice from educators that there is too much emphasis on assessment, and not enough emphasis on good practice.

Q: Will you be adding more content?

A: We will continue to add content for each grade level as we review new materials, and will also explore adding content that can support teachers as they work with English Language Learners and students with diverse learning needs. However, we will only add content if it passes a high-quality bar set by our education partners. During our two-year initial development effort, we heard from teachers a consistent theme: I am overwhelmed by the amount of resources available on the web, and I don't know how to find materials that I know are high quality. So, we are taking a conservative approach in the content we add to Teacher Advisor to build trust from teachers that our content is indeed the best you can find on the web.

Q: If I have content that I want included in Teacher Advisor, how can I submit it?

A: If you would like to submit elementary math content, or content on good teaching pedagogy, for consideration to be included in Teacher Advisor, you can email tahelp@us.ibm.com. Please include the following information in your submission:

A: IBM's philanthropic approach, aligned with our company’s global business strategy, is to provide our most innovative technology and talent to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, including helping to improve educational outcomes for all students. We believe that teachers are the greatest lever in positively impacting student achievement. We see Teacher Advisor as an ideal way to showcase Watson's ability to make a positive impact on the lives of educators.

Q: What other partners are involved in Teacher Advisor?

A: Teacher Advisor is not only supported by IBM philanthropic resources and an advisory board of renowned education leaders and teachers, but also by grants from The Ford, Carnegie, and Stavros Niarchos Foundations. In addition, IBM technologists work closely with a range of education experts to ensure that teachers have access to the best instructional resources available.

Q: How might Teacher Advisor change in the future?

A: We are always looking for ways to improve Teacher Advisor and ensure it continues to meet the needs of teachers everywhere. Our IBM technologists continue to collaborate with elementary math subject matter experts and teachers across the United States to train Watson to make more targeted and personalized recommendations. We will also be regularly adding additional content, while making improvements to the user interface based on feedback from our teacher-users.

Q: When will this be available in other geographies?

A: Teacher Advisor is a cloud-based web app that is accessible to anyone. However, it uses only U.S.-based content for the time being. The IBM Foundation will work with international partners to determine how to make Teacher Advisor relevant elsewhere over the course of 2021.

Q: When will you expand to other content areas and grade-levels?

A: For the foreseeable future, Teacher Advisor will remain a tool for elementary math teachers. We will listen to our advisory board of respected education leaders, and to our teacher-users, to determine if and when we will expand to other content areas and/or grade-levels.

Where does your content come from?

The content in Teacher Advisor comes from a variety of high-quality Open Educational Resource providers. Specifically, lesson plans come from EngageNY, CPALMS (Florida), North Carolina Department of Instruction, Massachusetts Department of Instruction, Share My Lesson (from the AFT), Student Achievement Partners and Open Up Resources. Because of the Creative Commons 4.0 license attributed to these providers, we give teachers the ability to modify these high-quality lesson plans through our "Customize" mode, which is currently available for all EngageNY and Open Up lesson plans. Additional activities can be added to those lessons from Illustrative Mathematics, Khan Academy, and Understood. Teachers can also view and download additional supporting video and strategy content from Khan Academy, Teaching the Core, the Hunt Institute, Louisiana Department of Education, Understood, America Achieves, UnboundEd, and EngageNY. All of our content has been reviewed by a team of former educators to ensure quality.

America Achieves

America Achieves is a non-profit focused on driving systemic change in education, specifically on education-to-workforce issues. They offer video modules to help teachers transition to college and career-ready standards, which are now available in Teacher Advisor. The videos, developed in response to teachers’ request for concrete examples of how to implement the new standards, feature live examples of teachers integrating the standards in classrooms from elementary through high school.

CPALMS

CPALMS is the State of Florida’s official source for standards information and course descriptions. It provides access to standards-aligned, free, high-quality instructional resources that have been developed specifically for the standards and vetted through a rigorous review process. CPALMS has made some of their best lessons available in Teacher Advisor, and more will be added to the corpus for kindergarten in 2021.

EngageNY

The EngageNY mathematics curriculum is a project of the New York State Education Department, which strives to provide leadership for a system that yields the best educated people in the world. EngageNY Math is now one of the most widely-used and standards-aligned curricula in the United States, and was ranked by EdReports.org as one of the highest quality full-grade curriculum providers available.

The Hunt Institute

The Hunt Institute is an independent nonprofit pursuing research, educational partnerships and events related to improving education policy. They seek to empower governors, policymakers, and other educational leaders to development and implement comprehensive strategies for the transformation of public education. As an organization influential in helping teachers adapt to shifts in the 21st century standards, the videos available on Teacher Advisor cover broad standards-topics to help teachers understand the meaning and vertical alignment of standards across grade levels.

Illustrative Mathematics

Illustrative Mathematics is committed to creating a world where learners know, use, and enjoy mathematics. They have created high-quality educational resources for teachers and students to know, use and enjoy mathematics. Teacher Advisor features Illustrative Mathematics tasks and teacher-facing video explanations for Grades K-5.

Content Available: In-depth student-facing activities, along with teacher-facing commentary (tasks) for Grades K-8; Fractions concept progression videos for Grades 3-5

Inside Mathematics

Through Inside Mathematics, K–12 educators can strengthen their classroom teaching by viewing—and trying out—best practices and resources from fellow teachers and instructional coaches. Inside Mathematics includes videos and other resources that showcase real mathematics teaching and learning, freely available to educators around the world. A service of the Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin, Inside Mathematics continues to explore everyday classrooms, with new content updated regularly.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom, entirely for free to students, parents, and educators across the world. Teacher Advisor curated all relevant grades 3-8 math videos from Khan Academy's extensive collection, and in partnership with EngageNY and Open Up, mapped all videos to their appropriate lesson plans in our collection.

Louisiana Department of Education

The Louisiana Department of Education is focused on implementing Louisiana Believes, the state’s plan to ensure every child is on track to college or a professional career. As part of this plan, the department provides teachers with the tools and guidance they need to plan and deliver lessons that meet new standards.

Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is committed to preparing all students for success in the world that awaits them after high school. As part of this effort, the department has developed of a number of Model Curriculum Units, created by teams of teachers from across the Commonwealth.

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction seeks to prepare every public school student to graduate ready for post secondary education and work, prepared to be a globally engaged and productive citizen. Accordingly, it has provided sets of lessons that align with mathematics content standards, as well as the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Open Up Resources

Open Up Resources is a nonprofit organization developing the highest quality full-course curricula available to K–12 districts, provided for free as Open Educational Resources (OER) to promote instructional equity. OUR partners with the country’s foremost materials experts to author superb curriculum and deliver essential implementation support, from professional development to printing. The Open Up Resources middle school math curriculum available on Teacher Advisor has been expertly authored by Illustrative Mathematics, quality reviewed against key rubrics, and written to develop students into mathematical thinking. The curriculum is the highest rated middle school math series according to the nonprofit curriculum review site EdReports.

Share My Lesson is a destination for educators who dedicate their time and professional expertise to provide the best education for students everywhere. The Share My Lesson resources available on Teacher Advisor have been vetted by our subject-matter experts, and are some of the best resources available from this AFT-sponsored tool.

Student Achievement Partners is a non-profit organization with one purpose: to help all students and teachers see their hard work lead to greater student achievement. These materials are some of their many free, ready-to-use classroom resources designed to help educators understand and implement college and career-ready standards.

UnboundEd

UnboundEd is a non-profit organization that provides free, standards-aligned resources and immersive training for teachers and leaders in pursuit of equity. UnboundEd's online curriculum resources for Grades PK-12, a number of which have been integrated into Teacher Advisor, have been reviewed and sequenced by math and ELA experts. UnboundEd also serves as Teacher Advisor's primary content partner, vetting the content for inclusion in TA, and serving as subject-matter experts to help train the Watson computing engine in elementary math.

Teacher Advisor With Watson is the first ever Watson-powered tool designed specifically for teachers.

What is Watson?

Watson is an advanced computing solution capable of providing expert-level insights and advice to human beings working in a wide variety of fields, including medicine and education. Specifically, Watson is good at analyzing massive amounts of information (research publications, news, social media, organizational data, medical data, lesson plans, etc.) and providing industry professionals (doctors, teachers, accountants, etc.) with relevant and clear recommendations based on a user-level request.

How Teacher Advisor With Watson works

How does this help teachers?

Because of Watson's ability to identify and then refer back to relevant concepts and relationships within a large body of information (in this case, the information we're talking about is the library of free educational resources that we uploaded to, and had enriched by, Watson), Teacher Advisor can and does return highly informed results and recommendations based on in-tool search requests from teachers. Watson presents the best known matches between a given search term and all the vetted resources it has analyzed—even if the most highly-ranked resource doesn't contain the exact keyword you entered in your search.

How was Watson integrated into Teacher Advisor?

We began with 1,000+ lessons, activities, documents, and videos for Watson to ingest. Then, using Watson Discovery Service (just one of the many ways to leverage the power of Watson), all of these resources were organized, studied, and enriched by Watson.

What does "enriched" mean?

Because it understands human language, Watson can add education-related concepts to individual resources, and can also identify meaningful relationships across resources. This ultimately helps Watson make its resource recommendations. Former teachers and math experts, as well as other technical experts, provide Watson with the necessary guidance and training along the way.

What's next for Teacher Advisor With Watson?

We've only touched the surface of what's possible with Watson! With your help, and thanks to a continued partnership with a dedicated team of former math teachers and coaches, we plan to train Watson to better understand the elementary math domain, ultimately enabling it to provide more targeted and personalized recommendations for individual teachers.
